Prambanan

The beautiful temples of Prambanan were built about 850 by the Mataram dynasty. They celebrate the Hindu trinity of Creator (Brahma), Sustainer (Vishnu) and Destroyer (Shiva). The structures resemble those at Angkor Wat in that the spires represent mountains.

The temple complex has suffered from centuries of major earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Many of the temples had to be reconstructed from the rubble that can be seen everywhere. The last major quake was in 2006.

Here's a detail from the Shiva temple showing the various gargoyles and guard dogs.

This is Brahma, the creator, with four faces signifying the four winds. Brahma is considered the Creator of the Universe.

Unlike Angkor Wat, Prambanan has some original images. Like Angkor Wat, the temple interiors were intended for the gods, not people, i.e. they are barren, small and dark.

We were fascinated by these bird people. They may be examples of Garuda or simply other devas.

Yes, 9th Century kitties! The bird looks nervous. The artist appeared to anthropomorphize many of the subjects!

Monkeys separated by a guard dog. Reminiscent of the Gates of Hell.

The admiral safe under a temple guard. Note the temple to the right is leveled. The area is among the most tectonically active in the world and it is amazing anything still stands after 1200 years.

OK, we've "done" the two main attractions of the Yogyakarta area, which really are world-class. Before we leave, let's take a little road trip through the Dieng Plateau...
