Huahine is easily our favorite island in French Polynesia. It lacks the big resorts found on Moorea or (cringe) Bora Bora and has the nice, clean little town of Fare, complete with 2 Internet cafes and lots of public dumpsters. This is the view from the anchorage off Fare on the NW side of the island. There is good diving at the pass into the lagoon. The Captain yields to temptation and gets some tattoos. The Artiste, Thoti, is obviously not afraid of his art. He has tattoos over his entire left side, even inside his ear. Note the Dahon folding bikes. They are very handy and easy to move onto and off the boat. Huahine has a saltwater lake on its north side, the site of many chiefly residences and mares, as well as fish traps, which you see above. The fish would be herded into the "V" of the trap until they reached the pen at the tip. This could be any century. One must imagine the awe when first glimpsing this tropical gem. Not a soul to be seen! Our own garden of Eden. Isn't this just gorgeous?
Huahine, like Tahiti, is really 2 islands, though in the case of Huahine the islands would be separate but for a bridge between them. One really neat place in Huahine is the abandoned 5-star resort on Huahine Iti; it was wiped out by a cyclone and never rebuilt.. Here's the beach of the old hotel - perfect! No wonder the crew left the Bounty. When Samuel Taylor Coleridge penned "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" he hadn't envisioned this pristine dream of Everyman. Talk about privacy. John waiting to capture the sun setting. This is a grotto attached to the hotel's swimming pool. The pool is now a lilly pond, and no doubt, a mosquito factory. Robinson Crusoe. Note Raiatea off his right shoulder, Taha'a off his left. We never get tired of another tropical sunset. We are on the beach. Need we say more?
Here's a French Navy ship coming through the south pass at Fare. Just 12nm W is the legendary island of Raiatea. Please join us
