(Click on an island to go there...) They were named "Society Islands" by Capt Cook because they had formed a close-knit little group out in the middle of the ocean. Tahiti is a few hundred nautical miles south of the western Tuamotus but in many ways it is light years distant. The Society Islands are high islands similar to the Marquesas, and Papeete resembles Paris more than anywhere else in French Polynesia. Anyway, let's get going to Tahiti.
